How do I stop the screen time argument every night?
If every evening ends in the same row about five more minutes, you are not doing it wrong and you are not on your own. Ofcom found a third of parents find it hard to control their child's screen time. The fight is usually not about the minutes at all.
Why it keeps happening
A negotiable rule invites negotiation; every session ends in a fresh argument because there is no agreed structure and the parent is the referee.
What works
Agree the structure once with the child in the room: core time that is theirs, earned time through jobs at their star rate, protected windows nobody can buy. Then the timer is the referee and the parent is out of the doorway.
If your child is younger
The three kinds of time set up at eight mean the phone at eleven arrives into rules that already exist, so nothing is renegotiated the week it arrives.
